The Universität Karlsruhe (TH) is the oldest technical university in Germany. Since its establishment in 1825, the University has been host to a number of famous scientists such as Heinrich Hertz and Ferdinand Redtenbacher who outlined the fundamentals of the science of mechanical engineering, and Otto Lehmann who conducted pioneering research in liquid crystals. It was in Karlsruhe that Carl Benz acquired the scientific tools he needed to invent the automobile and Fritz Haber first synthesized ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen – work for which he later received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
| 1825 | Founded as a polytechnical school, modeled on the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris |
| 1885 | Renamed „Technical College“ |
