Karlsruhe has an excellent public transport network with tramlines going to most destinations. The price for a single journey in the city centre is €2 and for a 24-hour ticket it is €4. For more information see the KVV website.

Places to go out for food and drink

Being a university town, Karlsruhe is well endowed with a variety of bars, restaurants, clubs and entertainment venues. Try the area around Ludwigsplatz, Europaplatz or the university, or see this link for more tips.

Pharmacy
The Internationale Apotheke at Kaiserstraße 80 is the nearest pharmacy to the International Department.

An office/stationary shop
Papier Fischer on Kaiserstraße sells a range of stationary.

Bookshops
Two good university bookshops are “Buch Kaiser” (Kaiserstraße 199) and “Buchhandlung am Kronenplatz” (near Kronenplatz).

Residents Permit:

All foreign students need a residence permit for the FRG (residence permit for students). After having entered Germany you must apply for it immediately at the Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) in Karlsruhe.
Please note:

  • For students the fee for the first application will be € 40,-.
    EU citizens, people who are married to a German citizen and welfare recipients will not be charged. For the following application (one year later) the fee will be € 20,-.
  • Students from EU countries, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Monaco, Israel and the USA can enter the FRG without a visa. They apply for the residence permit in Germany.
  • Students from other countries must have obtained a visa from the German embassy or the German consulate in their home country. These students have to hand in a “Aufenthaltsanzeige eines Ausländers” (document of residency for foreigners) at the Immigration Office.
  • Within three months after your entry you will need to hand in the following documents when you apply for a residence permit:
    1. Passport photograph
    2. Confirmation of the registration office
    3. Confirmation of your student status
    4. Rental contract
    5. Passport
    6. Proof of assured income (proof of studentship, notarised document from your bank stating that you have the financial means for your stay in Germany including a confirmation that you have sufficient financial means for a flight back to your country. You should expect around € 600 per month).
  • When your residence permit expires your must apply for a renewal in time
  • Before you apply for a residence permit you have to register at the Office of Residence Registration (Einwohnermeldeamt).
