International Department

Cooperation with technological leaders in industry

Increasing globalisation calls for innovative educational concepts: international firms need top national managers who are both highly technically qualified and also involved with the people, the language and the culture of their headquarters. The management of globally operating companies require to consider a wealth of local, national and international issues. This creates a tremendous need to find new and improved ways of operation.

The International Department (ID) was founded in 1999 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Weule, former CTO DaimlerChrysler AG from 1990 – 1996. Due to his professional experience he realized the need to offer international programs at German Universities. The ID can best be described as a service organization, managing international degree programs. The ID is strongly associated with the University of Karlsruhe yet organized as an independent private entity supervised by an advisory council that comprises administrative leaders from the University alongside with top-level executives from associated companies. So far 25 industrial associates support this innovative educational concept with scholarships, internships or trainee programs for graduates. This close cooperation with industry is the key to the ID’s success, as its courses meet the demand of internationally operating companies. The Universität Karlsruhe (TH) and the ID fully cooperate within a matrixlike structure that ensures the integration of academic, scientific and technical infrastructures.

The ID also hosts a comfortable accommodation located between the bustling downtown area of Karlsruhe, the Baroque Palace and the campus. The historical building has been fully refurbished to include a state of the art residence, offering comfortable rooms with a private bath and internet access, fully adapted to meet the needs of executives. Kurt Bang, Head of Personnel, Endress & Hauser, considers the Master of Science Programs offered at the HECTOR School as »the high-end program of executive education. They offer the ideal balance between management and technical knowledge«.
